:- from Patto -- TOP 500 REVIEWER : Forgotten heroine of the Crimea ( 5.0 out of 5 stars )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lewkuh -- That other angel of the Crimea : A refreshingly different perspective on the Crimean war, Mary Seacole tells of her exploits as a nurse and inn-keeper on the embattled peninsula. Seacole has a witty, charming way with words and despite her bravery and tireless efforts remains humble throughout. Her fetishization of British troops would be troubling (I don't think you meet any British soldier that is less than honorable and brave in this book), but for the revelation that she equally took care of the Russian wounded whenever possible. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from MH -- Write title, wrong book : Unfortunately the book cover did not match the actual book. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2021 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from dgl2011 -- Right cover. Wrong book. : While the cover on the outside of the book is correct, another title is actually within the book. Asking for a full refund. Ridiculous. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2021 )

- 5.0 out of 5 stars from emmathers -- A great autobiographical journal : It was very interesting to read about a nurse way back when who traveled around and did nurse stuff. It gives great insight into the conditions. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2014 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from cassandra a floyd -- Nursing history in the African Diaspora : An Educational and exciting read! ( Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2019 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Pruman -- Interesting, informative , thought provoking : I knew of Mary Seacole only from various news items and TV magazine programmes., so I sought a biography. The one I found left the distinct impression that the author felt that whilst Mrs Seacole was a remarkable women, she was not the great nursing champion that some believe. I then decided to read her own accounts of her life and travels up to the end of the Crimean War. Her attempts to become a nurse with Florence Nightingale show her to be a formidable, determined if naive woman. Passing her failure of as being the result of objection to her racial origin, as she did and many do now, is simplistic. Being not being a high birth, powerful connections, or of any renown in England much beyond the regiments she encountered in Jamaica would have counted against her just as much if not more than her colour. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from David Llewellyn -- Witty and myth-busting : What emerges from Mary Seacole's own account of her life is a far more interesting and admirable character than some of the more recent hagiographies have to offer. The image of her as a "pioneering nurse" is two-dimension. Seacole was a feisty, opinionated businesswoman with nerves of steel. Before she'd even set foot in the Crimea she'd run a hotel in Panama, when it was one of the scariest, most crime-ridden places in the world. Her compassion for soldiers in Crimea is touching without being overly sentimental. And her refusal to be defined or denigrated for the colour of her skin could have you cheering out loud. She's not without her flaws - at least from a modern perspective. She's a bit of a snob, and often condescending (and maybe even a little bit racist) towards the black people who work under her. There's no doubt that she indulges in a bit of Victorian myth-making herself - this book was very much a conscious piece of publicity when she was low on funds - but as an account of 19th Century ingenuity, bravery and adventure, it's second to none. - 1.0 out of 5 stars from Andrew UK -- I thought she was a nurse? : I was expecting a story about the life and adventures of a nurse instead it is the life and story of a NAFFI (cafeteria) owner. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 4, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from JW -- mrs sealcole's life, first hand information, of course it is good! : How can a republished diary of a great historical value be anything but good! I wanted to know the life of Mrs Seacole and this book presents it first hand, according to her. The editor made good explanations that helps to understand the background of Mrs Seacoles story, all together it is a good read! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 5, 2017 )
- 4.0 out of 5 stars from Anthony -- I thoroughly enjoyed it but what happened to Mother Seacole after she ... : I thoroughly enjoyed it but what happened to Mother Seacole after she came back from the Crimea is a life lesson in putting your own financial security before you put the security of others before yours. She was selfless and a true heroine and love everything British but as Salman Rushdie once said that she was looked over in favour of Florence Nightingale only because of the colour of her skin. The book makes you feel as if you are in the thick of the adventurous life of Mother Seacole as well as the harshness of the Crimean war. What is interesting is the sense of history repeating itself, because Mother Seacole talks about issues such as racism and war in the Crimea; two thing that are still prevalent in 2015.
