Founded in the basics of social science, the "formula" described often seems obvious: I found myself nodding and thinking, "of course this works" at many points throughout the book. However, the way the authors have put it all together, and their approach for ensuring its effectiveness make this book a highly useful resource for anyone whose job involves problem-solving. A scalable methodology that can be applied as a whole, but also might be useful even if just some steps of the process are implemented. Specifically, if one can take a complex subject and break it down into its simplest components, it instantly becomes much more understandable and actionable. Benjamin and Komlos have managed to do that with the subject of complexity itself. By taking a simpler, yet scientifically rigorous approach to dealing with complexity, they have managed to "crack the code", and develop a clear formula for solving difficult business problems. I’m a physician becoming more involved in the management side of healthcare. The organizations I work with are full of well meaning, talented individuals, who like myself, don’t have a clue where to start investing our time and energy to solve problems. A friend recommended this as a good place to start and for the first time I feel hope! I feel the notty complex problems we deal with are ready for cracking, not by expensive consultants who have been unable to solve these issues in the past, but by the genius within and outside our organization itself, the frontline workers, managers patients and families. Moreover the book is written with humour, concrete and compelling examples. I feel like I know the authors, and they are behind me every step of the way. Thanks guys.
